Test Prints

In my test print selection i have included repeated outcomes that are very similar because i want to be able to compare them against each other in print format. I have also cropped images 5, 7, 8 and 11 for a more professional outcome and to compare against the original.

Documentary Structure

I have decided to change the structure of my documentary project. Originally i had decided to make it a moving image outcome, with the idea being inspired by the film La Jetée, making it a slideshow of still images with a voiceover being provided by staff at Woodside giving information about the park and the animals.

However after a lot of consideration i am rejecting this idea because i feel that the outcomes i have collected are effective in providing interesting composition, vibrant colours, engaging subjects and successful portrayal of environment and the different types of animals. So my decision to change the structure is because i want the focus to remain on the images and for the audience to have freedom to view them for as long as they want. I’d say i am proud of my outcomes which is why i want them to be on display.

Another look at Rejected Photos

I decided to go through the rejected photos from my first professional visit to Woodside. I wanted to check for any outcomes that i may had put aside because of lack of interesting composition compared to the better outcomes. I found it very beneficial to go through these photos because i found a small collection of potentially successful prints that convey interaction between staff and animals as well as a couple of more abstract outcomes. I will make test prints of these along with my other narrowed down images.

Selection Techniques and Change of Plans

At university today i learnt two different techniques for narrowing down a large selection of photographs. Physically looking at samples of the image and giving them a rating out of 5 was effective because you have to keep in mind the intention of the project, therefore possibly having to exclude images that are good but not necessarily effective for the project. Viewing the images on a screen in Lightroom allows you to give them a rating out of 5 stars and to flag favourite outcomes. Both techniques are effective and i found them to be of great help in narrowing down my photos to the best outcomes for the project intention.

After this session i had another look and think about the collection of photographs i obtained from my two visits, and i feel that my project will be successful enough without having to conduct another visit to Woodside. My plan was to capture photos on the reptile handling display and the bird show display that they put on, but i feel positive that my photos of the tigers, white wolves, birds, lemurs, meerkats and Siberian lynx will be enough to reach the best grade that i can achieve.

So i will not be conducting another visit to Woodside, therefore allowing me more time to do sketchbook work, compare prints, print finals and mount. 

Planned visit to Woodside

My next visit to Woodside i plan on capturing the interactions of the staff with the animals and the public through the daily displays they put on. This includes the bird show and reptile handling because i didn't cover these areas in my first visit. I plan to go to Woodside on 22nd April.

Best Photos From Pre Visit

These are the most successfully photos i feel that have come from the pre visit collection. They effectively convey an example of the type of animals at Woodside while providing good composition and vibrant colours. I will add these to my favourite selection of photographs from my two visits to Woodside for consideration for the final prints.

Pre Project Visit

I took these photos before i had to change my documentary location to Woodside, so i thought i would include them to show what i got from my first visit. However because i was only there for a casual visit i didn't have the intention of capturing photographic images so many of these outcomes i feel are not very strong compared to my other visit.
